A note of caution for young singers

A note of caution for young singers.

A word of warning for the singers I work with!  As much as the doctor in the article tosses off the surgery fix at the end of the article, one is far better off working on their vocal health FIRST. In the end, YOU are responsible for your vocal health, and if you don't have good technique to begin with (or as a result of rehab), no amount of surgery is going to save your career. Learn about your instrument and treat yourself as a vocal athelete!

Why It’s Smart to Be Bilingual

Why It’s Smart to Be Bilingual.

The next time a student complains about having to sing in a foreign language and all the work that accompanies it, I'll direct them to this post. Not only is it part of the job description for some of us, it's good for you too! (Yes, even those of you headed for musical theater. You never know where you might get hired, or when a special skill might be that which gets you hired.)

Ok - juries are rapidly approaching!! How are your pieces in terms of memorization? Take a look at this blog post, take a deep breath, and get back to work! You can do it - just get out of your own way and trust the work we've done all semester. (And do your work earlier in the semester....)

Day Two: Your latest musical obsession

Again - I'm' thinking outside the box on this one. My latest favorite composing team is Kerrigan and Lowdermilk. You can find their website here and purchase their sheet music here, along with several other upcoming musical writers. Many thanks to Jackie and Erik for that last link!!

For your listening enjoyment, I give you "Say the Word" from The Unauthorized Autobiography of Samantha Brown.

Day One: The first musical you saw.

Ok - so this is the first one I remember seeing, and the one that absolutely started my love of musical theater. Camelot. Thank you Baldwinsville Theater Guild for introducing me to musical theater! Hands down - the following video is wonderful and is the DVD to watch. If I can't see Julie Andrews on the DVD, then Meg Bussert is a perfect second!

The economy and the arts - and how to stay on top of them

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/culturemonster/2011/01/republican-study-group-proposes-cutting-arts-funds.html

Danger signs chronicled by the LA Times. Recommendation - set up a Google Alert for your particular area of the performing arts so you can keep tabs on it (heck - do it for the other subjects you want to keep tabs on). You'll get feeds from all over the globe. Come to think of it, create an alert for your name so you can keep close tabs on how you are being featured in the media.

Top 10 Composers: Which 20th-Century Masters Will Make the Cut? - NYTimes.com

Top 10 Composers: Which 20th-Century Masters Will Make the Cut? - NYTimes.com.

Interesting interactive entry on nytimes.com over the top 10 composers - there are several different articles: which 20th century composers would be considered among the giants of classical composition (this link), composers from Vienna, a chance to vote on the list  - but be sure to catch the original top 10 list, a link to which is in the first main paragraph of the article in the above link. Many of the choices are composers that you will run into in your vocal studies, so it's worth your time to peruse the choices. And make some of your own....

Once More With Feeling: What is the Disconnect between Disciplines?

Once More With Feeling: What is the Disconnect between Disciplines?.

It's the biggest gripe I've got - why do folks think singing is "easy?" It ain't - not at a competitive level. 9 years to make a dancer - same for a singer. Or for any other knowledge area. Don't let it be you that walks in to anyone and says:

"I need to do this next week (or tomorrow - or this afternoon) - can you help me get ready?"

And don't let it happen to anyone you work with.
